We educated ourselves at the Te Papa Tongarewa (New Zealand's national museum) for most of the afternoon and then indulged ourselves with a wine-paired tasting menu at Logan Brown. Delish.

Things we learnt at the Te Papa Tongarewa:

  • There were indeed such things at 250kg Moa birds roaming through NZ and this is not just a "guide fact" (the birds are now extinct, but skeletal remains confirm existence)
  • There are an incredible number of species (fauna & flora) that are unique to NZ due to its isolation and sadly many of them have been made extinct by our presence.
  • We saw preserved colossal squid which was over 4m long, weighed 500kg and comes complete with beak mouth and claws in lieu of suckers - terrifying.
  • NZ north island moves 4cm away from the south island every year due to tectonic plates.
  • The discrepancy between the translations of the Treaty of Waitangi documents signed in the 1940s between representatives of the British Crown and Māori chiefs
  • More of the customs and the skill of the Mauri
