Up and out early for our 8am shuttle service, we were relieved to hear that due to a local running race around the crater (crazy) the famous crossing should be quieter today. Result! Though still the busiest we have seen NZ full-stop, most people on the walk were courteous in being overtaken or set a good pace.

The hike rewarded us with varied landscapes, stunning views and a bit of a challenge terrain-wise. Buoyed up by our sense of accomplishment in having completed the hike in 5hours (with lunch) , we nobly completed some yoga (core and stretching this time) when the shuttle dropped us back at the campsite. After that, only a soak in the neighbouring river and a healthy glass of Bladen Reisling before dinner would do (one of the specimens tried and testing in Malbourough which I personally think must be what angels drink).
